Chief Electoral Officer

Description:

It is the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) responsibility to ensure that all elections and referenda run fairly and smoothly. The CEO carries out the Standing Regulations related to CSU Elections, as guided by the Standard Operating Procedures of their office. The Chief Electoral Officer reports to the Chairperson of the Council of Representatives, the Judicial Board, and the Council of Representatives.

Responsibilities:

– Verify that the parties are complying with these regulations;
– Ensure the integrity and independence of the electoral process;
– Issue directives on the carrying out of these regulations;
– Receive and examine the reports and returns transmitted to them;
– Inquire into the legitimacy of candidates’ election expenses and of referendum expenses;
– Be responsible for the archive of election results;
– Propose electoral reforms to Council;
– Provide any person applying therefore with advice and information regarding the carrying out of these regulations;
– Give public access to the information, reports, returns or documents relating to these regulations;
– Hold information meetings for the benefit of candidates and referendum committees;
– Create and maintain an elections website;
– Advertise the elections and promote participation in the electoral process on campus;
– Update the Standard Operating Procedures for their office as required.
– Hiring/appointing deputy electoral officers, polling clerks and other elections officers as may be the case
– Ensure that the election or referendum is properly conducted, and, for that purpose, shall see to the training of the other election officers and direct their work.

Essential Requirements:

– Current Concordia undergraduate student, registered in the Fall 2020 semester;
– Extensive knowledge of the CSU Bylaws and Standing Regulations;
– Able to take initiative and work independently;
– Must not be a member of CSU Judicial Board, Council of Representatives, Executive, Concordia Senate, or Concordia Board of Governors.

Assets:

– Bilingualism
– Knowledge of CSU policies and elections procedures

Notes: The CEO is appointed until they resign, are removed by the CSU Judicial Board, or are no longer a student. The CEO works approximately 3-4 months per year.
